IRD - MAD

Many wild plants have developed during evolution the ability to form viable seeds and contain maternal clones, an intriguing characteristic called apomixis.
The Mechanisms of Apomictic Development (MAD) project aims to improve our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in apomixis and thus allow the reprogramming of the sexual reproduction of crop plants towards asexual alternatives.
This knowledge should help to remove the barriers that, today, deprive breeders and farmers of the benefits of apomixis.
